One hundred years after its creation, the world's most legendary perfume returns in a new, stripped-back form&nbsp; and the question it first asked has never felt more alive.

It is 1921. Gabrielle Chanel stands surrounded by flasks and samples and when she reaches the fifth, she pauses. Something is different. Something is right. She doesn't describe what she smells because, for the first time in the history of perfumery, what she holds in her hands defies description entirely. She smiles and decides to let the women do the talking.
She fills a handful of simple bottles with this mysterious liquid and distributes them among her inner circle with a single instruction: "Tell me the reactions." The reactions come swiftly. Everyone who encounters the scent is stopped in their tracks, captivated, slightly bewildered. "What is your perfume?" they ask. Nobody can answer. That, Chanel understands immediately, is the point.
N&deg;5 is, and has always been, the first abstract perfume. Not a bouquet you can identify, not a garden you can walk through, not a memory you can pin down but a feeling. A state. A kind of invisible elegance that settles on the skin and refuses to leave. Perfumer Ernest Beaux built it with rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and something unprecedented: a flood of aldehydes that lifted the florals into an entirely new dimension, crystalline and luminous, clean as a pressed linen shirt and as complex as desire.
For over a century, this abstraction has remained the most recognisable&nbsp; and simultaneously the least definable scent in the world. Marilyn Monroe wore it to bed and nothing else. Catherine Deneuve wore it to speak before she'd said a word. Andy Warhol reduced it to a pure graphic object. Each era projected its own obsessions onto N&deg;5 and each time the perfume absorbed them effortlessly, emerging transformed yet unchanged.

Now, in 2026, Chanel asks the question again. Master perfumer Olivier Polge&nbsp; who describes N&deg;5's originality as something that "grows as the years pass" has overseen the relaunch of the Eau de Toilette in a vessel of radical simplicity: a square-curved flacon with a cylindrical cap, no label, only the number N&deg;5 silkscreened in minimal black. A blank page. A return to the plain glass flasks Gabrielle herself favoured in those first, electric days.
&nbsp;The Eau de Toilette, first created in 1924, opens on a bright, luminous bouquet&nbsp; rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang exalted by aldehydes into something that shimmers between memory and dream. As it dries down, sandalwood and vetiver ground the composition with warmth and texture, a quietly bois&eacute;e foundation that gives the floral heart both depth and direction. It is, as Polge puts it, "a modern abstract floral composition distinguished by its subtly woody facet." Elegant. Complex. Irreducible.
And the new face? Margot Robbie&nbsp; a woman who, like the fragrance itself, seems to hold something perpetually in reserve. There is always a thought behind her eyes. A lightness in her posture, hands in pockets, utterly at ease. She is close enough to feel familiar, yet impossible to entirely know. The perfect ambassador for a perfume that belongs to everyone and explains itself to no one.
Ask those around you what N&deg;5 smells like in 2026 and the answers are immediate, instinctive, contradictory&nbsp; and all correct. Freedom. Universality. The essence of a certain bearing. Self-assurance. The night ahead. The invisible thread that runs between people who recognise each other across a room. It smells, above all, like an idea and ideas, as Chanel knew from the beginning, have no borders and no expiry.

"It smells of what each person desires. Whoever loves rose will find it. Whoever loves jasmine, the same. Whoever loves ideas those evaporations of possibility&nbsp; will find them here too."
